Skinimalism for More Naturalness: The New Minimalism in Skincare

NEW MINIMALISM IN SKINCARE

Margit Rüdiger | 24. August 2021
We know the term minimalism from art. In the early 1960s, it emerged in the USA as a counter-movement to expressionism. The artists focused only on the essentials in their works. The initial art movement has long since developed into a lifestyle concept that encompasses many areas of life. Nowadays, skincare is also included.

The term Skinimalism was declared a trend for 2021 earlier this year by the social media platform Pinterest. The trigger for this was the increasing frequency of search queries on topics such as "natural makeup" and "radiant skin naturally." The search term "natural skin" alone has recently increased by an incredible 400 percent, and hashtags like #skinimalism, #skinpositivity, and #bodypositivity have become popular on Instagram.

SKINIMALISM FOR MORE NATURALNESS

The idea is not only to focus on fewer but effective skincare and makeup products, but also to show your skin as it really is – not distorted by layers of primer, foundation, contouring powder, and blush or by social media filters that even hide the smallest pore. Real skin naturally has irregularities, spots, and pimples. It is alive. And you should definitely embrace that. By now, everyone knows that absolutely flawless skin is a big lie. It simply doesn't exist, even though filters, Photoshop, photo-editing apps, and airbrushed beauty brand campaigns want us to believe otherwise.

The fact is that too much of any cosmetic harms our skin. When it is covered by various layers of makeup such as foundation and powder, and perhaps even a Kardashian contouring, the pores can no longer breathe. Skin irritations and reactions are the result. The same applies to an oversized care program. Even the healthiest skin gives up when overloaded with facial oil, essence, peeling, sheet mask, serum, and so on.

If you then use products from different brands, the unwanted combination of various active ingredients is inevitable. This can lead to undesirable reactions. Some ingredients actively counteract each other, others have opposite effects, and still others have very similar effects and cancel each other out without any effect. And that's not all. Poor product quality and too low dosages can also have a long-term negative impact on the skin.

TURNAROUND COMES FROM KOREA

Skinimalism is composed of "skin" and "minimalism." It refers to a thoughtful care routine consisting of few but effective products with coordinated active ingredients. Sustainability and clean beauty come into play here. Surprisingly, the skin-care trend was born in a country where women often applied 17 or more layers to their skin in the morning—namely Korea. A face like a flawless canvas is no longer in trend there either. Certainly, the COVID-19 pandemic with home office and mask mandates contributed to this. Modern Korean women now prefer products that fulfill multiple benefits at once. This saves time, effort, and money. Not only in care. In makeup, the skin is allowed to show through—even with small imperfections. Usually, a BB cream is enough to achieve Glow 4.0.

THIS IS HOW YOU BECOME A SKINIMALIST

But how do you sensibly slim down your usual beauty routine and become a skinimalist? First, you should focus on your current skin needs. From dull complexion to acne and rosacea to fine lines and wrinkles, every skin has individual demands for its care. On this basis, you should build the three most important pillars of the daily routine – cleanse, care, protect.

With "Doctor Mi! medical skincare," it's very easy to achieve balanced, healthy, and radiant skin with just a few care steps. The active ingredient Retinol runs like a red thread throughout the entire line. Better known as Vitamin A, it has been a staple in skincare for decades. Countless studies demonstrate its power regarding collagen regeneration, barrier protection, skin metabolism regulation, pH value stabilization, and even the reduction of uneven pigmentation. Added to this is the innovative TECMi!® technology. This double encapsulation of the molecules allows the active ingredients to penetrate the dermis, where the crucial cells for skin renewal are located. Furthermore, the active ingredients are better protected against external influences such as light, which could harm them.
