Pure spring – but please without the stress for your skin!
I love spring: the first warm rays of sun, the fresh greenery, the sense of a new beginning. But in my practice, I am currently seeing the other side of this season as well. Many of my patients come to me with itchy eyes, sneezing, and a feeling of constant irritation. What often worries me about this: while hay fever is consistently treated, we often forget that our skin suffers just as much during pollen season.
Why pollen is more than just a sneezing problem
Unfortunately, pollen is not just an issue for the respiratory tract. It lands directly on the face and can massively disrupt the skin barrier there. Studies show that certain pollen components weaken the protective function and increase permeability. The result? The skin loses moisture, reacts more sensitively, and becomes more prone to inflammation.
Redness or a feeling of tightness in the spring are therefore no coincidence. They are the expression of an active inflammatory process.
The silent aging: "Inflammaging"
Allergic reactions release histamine. This not only causes itching but also intensifies inflammation at a cellular level, which burdens the skin in the long term. In dermatology, we call this inflammaging. These are silent, persistent inflammatory processes that accelerate the aging process:
-
The breakdown of collagen is promoted.
-
Cell regeneration is impaired.
-
The skin structure is sustainably weakened.
Allergies are therefore an underestimated driver of premature skin aging. It is not the one big reaction that counts, but these many small "mini-inflammations" that put the skin in a permanent state of irritation.
My advice: How to keep skin stable through pollen season
In longevity dermatology, it is about creating conditions under which the skin can remain healthy in the long term. Right now, it doesn't need "optimization," but rather security.
-
The barrier is the shield: A strong skin barrier prevents allergens from penetrating deeply. Lipids and moisture are crucial to keeping the structure intact.
-
Cell protection instead of irritation: Antioxidants help to reduce oxidative stress. Active ingredients like retinol additionally support cell regeneration.
-
Make use of rest periods: At night, repair processes, cell division, and barrier renewal run at full speed. Regeneration needs this space. My tip: Our REGENERATING NIGHT CREAM with TECMi Retinol gives the skin restful sleep and revitalizes the skin for a youthful, radiant complexion overnight.
-
Gentle routine: For irritated skin, skincare should be simplified. After cleansing, the skin should feel calm, not tight. Our pH-neutral BALANCING CLEANSER with panthenol and allantoin is perfect here. It effortlessly removes make-up while simultaneously providing the skin with moisture and skin-soothing active ingredients.
A small promise to yourself
A true reset means bringing the skin back into balance. When the skin feels tight and red, it needs protection and stability instead of the next harsh peel. Stay healthy and enjoy the sun, but with the right protection in your luggage!
